I would also like to share the director's picks for best and most interesting words from the spelling bee:
because - One of the most intense moments in the 3rd/4th grade spelling bee was when one student encountered this word - and spelled it perfectly!
trout - This word was actually featured in both the 3rd/4th and 5th/6th grade competitions. It was challenging for both spellers who received it! Who knew a fish could cause so much trouble??
ebb - Deceptively easy, unless you've never heard of it before.
smooshed - This one even stumped me. In my mind I could also see it spelled with a 'u' instead of 'oo', but luckily the speller was not as confused as I was and got it right!
doorjamb - Silent 'b'!
Chicago - Yes, proper nouns were fair game too! Did you know the windy city actually has its origins in Algonquin?
moxie - This word actually originates from the late 19th century as the brand name for a bitter syrup which then sold as a soft drink! Definitely not your typical Latin or Greek origin word!
Disneyfication - Maybe one of the most unique words of the day. But that didn't stop our speller from destroying it!
We hope to see even more spellers join us next year for another exciting spelling bee. Thank you!
Best,
Kaitlyn
